Call For Abstracts

The theme for the 21st SAAFoST International Congress and Exhibition "Growing Food Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future" was chosen because of the concerns both internationally and in Africa of how to feed the rapidly growing populations. This presents a huge challenge to the Food Scientist and what a better time to start finding solutions to these concerns than at this Congress.

The committee's approach to the programme structure is to ensure that the participants get most value for their money by including keynote addresses, plenary lectures and parallel sessions. We are committed to organizing and hosting a world-class Food Science and Technology event which will exceed all expectations.

Abstract Submissions

Original Research Abstract Submissions:

Abstracts of original research, for presentation as orals or posters, or covering topics of commercial appeal are invited to be presented at the above Congress. Submitted abstracts should be original, topical and current.

Original research papers are defined as those that cover specific, new and original research that have not been previously accepted for publication in a journal, presented in another conference or be under review at another conference.

Commercial appeal abstracts can be defined as abstracts not covering original research, but rather focusing on new applications of scientific research, review type papers, market research, consumer trends, regulatory guidelines or papers with a generic appeal to food industries, academia or consumers but still based on sound science. These abstracts are not intended for advertising specific products, companies or services.

Participants wishing to contribute to the scientific programme of the congress are kindly requested to submit their abstracts by email before the deadline date of 1st April, 2015. All abstracts to be submitted on line through the online submission system http://www.saafost2015.org.za/ Abstracts submitted by email, post or fax will not be accepted.

The scientific programme committee will endeavour to schedule abstracts according to the author's preferences but reserves the right to decide on the final form.

Abstract Topics:

The Scientific programme will strive to address global food science and technology issues in the following topics in the plenary sessions, parallel sessions, poster sessions, specialist symposia, workshops and sessions with commercial appeal.

  9. Functional Ingredients and Foods.
  10. Ethnic Foods.
  11. Food Chemistry and Analysis.
  12. Food Security and Sustainability.
  13. Nanotechnology, Food Structure and Food Systems.
  14. Technology Transfer.
  15. Biofortification and Bioavailability.
  16. Innovations in Food Processing Technologies and Engineering.
  17. Food Legislation and its impact on the Food Industry.
  18. Advances in Food Packaging.
  19. Water Quality and Safety.
  20. Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.
  21. Food Biotechnology.
Submission Guidelines:

To submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation:

  1. Upon registering as a user on the online submission system an abstract template will be emailed to you.
  2. Insert your abstract into the template. It is important that you do not enter any of the authors' information into the template. This will be done during the submission process. You are to only include the title of your abstract and the body text.
  3. Your presentation title should not exceed 50 words and your body text should not exceed 300 words.
  4. You will then proceed to login to the online submission system and follow the steps. You will be required to enter the authors information, upload your abstract in the template provided, select whether you would like to do an oral presentation or a poster presentation and select which topic best suits your abstract. Once you have answered all the mandatory questions you will click finish and a confirmation email with the abstract you uploaded onto the system will be sent to you.
  5. You will be able to amend a submission up until the deadline date. You will need to login and click on your existing submission. Complete the steps and click finish to confirm your changes. Again a confirmation email will be sent to you with the abstract that was uploaded onto the system.

Industry Novel Ingredients and Technologies Showcase:

Oral presentations on behalf of commercial enterprises:

These presentations will form part of an industry Novel Ingredient and Technology Showcase within the main SAAFoST programme entitled Novel Ingredients and Technologies. This will be open to all congress delegates at no additional charge. There are only 7 x 30 minute slots available. These highly sort after slots will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. However, in order to increase your company's chance of being able to present, a sponsorship or R15 000.00(excluding vat) will be required.

Please adhere to the following notes for presentations on behalf of commercial enterprises:

Only use company logos in a discrete way. This is not a marketing presentation but rather an opportunity to share new ideas and technologies that your company may have developed and which you wish to convey to the audience. As this is a technical/scientific and not a commercial presentation, please do not mention prices, nor compare anything to your competitors or share where you buy your products. You may state that if any delegates are interested in obtaining more information they may contact you after the presentation.

You will be required to submit an abstract by the submission deadline of the 1st April 2015. Please follow the submission guidelines as detailed above.

Acceptance/Rejection of Abstracts.

The scientific programme committee will review all submitted abstracts and reserves the right to accept or reject any abstract. Selected abstracts will be presented as oral or poster presentations. Authors of abstracts accepted will receive notification and information regarding their presentation by the 15th May 2015.

All authors will be informed in writing of the details concerning the exact time and date of their presentation. Poster presenters will be notified of the poster size and guideline in writing as well.
